The 2017 Resource Center for Religious Institutes National Conference was held at the Hyatt Regency in St. Louis, Missouri last week. Attended by about 600 sisters, priests, brothers and lay people, the theme for this year’s event was “Changing Times: Challenges and Transitions.” Sessions for faith-based providers varied from legal topics, to board governance, to protecting and serving vulnerable populations. Of particular note was the emphasis on eldercare. Health Dimensions Group (HDG) served as a sponsor and I was honored to represent my firm at the conference.
The theme of “Change” is no more evident than in the field of eldercare. I had the chance to talk to many conference attendees and a consistent theme was the challenge religious congregations and communities have in caring for their aging members. The commitment to providing the very best care in the most appropriate venue was evident – whether that care is provided through home care or in a facility-based environment such as long-term skilled nursing.
I was struck with what creativity and thoughtful planning is used to prepare for and meet the care delivery needs of their members. From partnerships with other Catholic religious communities, to relationships with other faith-based skilled nursing care facilities, to third-party management, the women and men religious I met work hard to ensure their members are lovingly and respectfully cared for as they age.
