Health Dimensions Group asked leaders in senior living and care to sum up their organizations’ experiences in 2023 using just one word. A common thread in many responses was centered around the challenges of navigating and recovering in the aftermath of the pandemic. Here is how senior living and care leaders defined the past year:

“Challenging” – Krystal Smith, Owner, Napa Valley Senior Living

In a post-COVID world, government support has ended, and we are left with the highest wages ever, staffing shortages, the highest expenses ever, and residents/patients with the highest care needs ever.

“Evolving” – Pamela Klingfus, CEO, Christian Community Homes and Services

2023 felt like we could begin to leave COVID behind and transform back to our new normal.

“Repositioning” – Joe Signore, President, Tapestry Senior Living

As a company, we are focusing more on third-party management and selling away the owned assets. We also are incorporating new technologies around AI and trying to position ourselves ahead of the technology curve.

“Scaling” – Sharon Thole, EVP, Operations, Health Dimensions Group

In 2023, we needed to scale everything: scale up revenue and occupancy, scale down expenses and agency, and scale to a reasonable margin to sustain into the future.

“Changes” – Lita Frederickson, Accura Healthcare

There were constant changes in the rules and regulations, as well as many changes in our leadership team and residents.

“Resilient” – Murray Finger, Administrator, St.Francis Health Services-Zumbrota

I believe we are still in recovery mode after three years with COVID. COVID was still front and center as part of our operational fabric. We must be resilient in acknowledging its continued existence.

“Challenging” – James Aurand, Administrator, Lock Haven Rehabilitation and Senior Living

Staffing continues to be our biggest struggle. One step forward and two steps back is the feeling most days.

“Growth” – Erin Shvetzoff Hennessey, CEO, Health Dimensions Group

In 2023, we repositioned our organization from recovery to growth with the addition of new communities, new developments in the works, and new consulting services. We look forward to continuing on that path in 2024!
